Hurray!!! A new territory of eco center Djeyran starts living!!!!

The first stallion of Przewalski's horse was let out to the new open-air cage in the new territory of eco center Djeyran.

This event has been expected for very long time. Finally, horses has begun their transfer to a new territory! If you remember, our project has started the work for expanding the territory of the ecocentre. Shurtan refinery plant has helped the ecocentre a lot and, in the framework of this joint project a wonderful open-air cage centre was built. It is really amazing.

Discussions near the built open-air cage complex. From left to right - Sophia Kim; Alexei Volkov; Erkin aka, the director of the ecocenter; Natalia Vasilyevna who is sitting on the damp desert ground; Olga Pereladova, the head of the Central Asia program WWF; and Natasha V. Marmazinskaya.

Here is just a short explanation of how it all started.

There was one little issue with the old territory of the ecocentre – there wasn't enough of it. It led to the second issue – increase of the population of Asiatic wild ass and Przewalski's horse, which were well secured and cared on that territory, has led to lack of fodder. It cannot be called a problem because it is good when the population is growing. However, together with the growth of the population of these species, forage reserves were shrinking more and more on the closed territory of the ecocentre of 5 000 hectare. New lands were needed. The animals could not be moved out into the wild environment in other areas of Uzbekistan, we simply have no  other desert protected areas in our country besides the ecocentre. It is surprising, isn’t it? In the country, where 85% percent of the territory are deserts and semi-deserts, there are no really working desert protected areas!!! And it is still dangerous to set free the animals to unguarded, unprotected environment. Consciousness of people is still not able to understand it – the animals will be killed immediately.

The conclusion is natural – new territories were needed for moving out some animals there (especially part of Przewalski's horse and Asiatic wild ass  populations because they are big, eat a lot and trample down a lot) in order to save and develop populations of these species and population of Djeyran gazzelle.  But immediate resettlement of the animals to the new territory would not be correct. They needed to be stayed in open-air cages during some time for adaptation.

When the project was coming to the end we planned to move a part of the animals to the new territory. But we couldn’t because the open air cage complex was continuously being built, becoming better and better. We could not risk the animals. And currently, the open air cage complex has been completed and the animals can be gradually transferred to the new territory.

And finally it has happened. The first stallion of the Przewalski's horse was transferred to the new open air cage complex.

Today I received a phone call. I looked on the telephone display. Natalia Vasilyevna Soldatova, the soul of the ecocenter and its deputy director, was calling. I picked up the receiver and heard her delighted voice: “Lyosha, plus one. Got it. It’s started.”

“What has started, Natalia Vasilyevna? ”

“It’s started. The first horse was transfered”.

And she told me everything. I am telling you as it was described by Natalia Vasilyevna with my small remarks:

“… This is how it is happening – We put fodder into the catching cage and attract there horses one by one. When a horse comes in, we close the catching cage for 1-2 days. Then, a horse (we decided to start with the stallions) is forced to enter the catching corridor (that is placed on the right side) where a portable cage is placed and where he was driven into (the process could be seen below) ”

Then he was transported in the portable cage from the old territory to a new centre of adaptation
The portable cage is opened on the new territory
And he galloped towards a new life

Now here we will form a herd. Then they will have 3 months of adaption. Then the horses will be set free to the new territory where they will live freely but under the vigilant control of the ecocentre personnel.

When we were writing the arcticle more and more animals were transfered to the new territory.
