The GEF Small Grants Programme

in Uzbekistan

The Republic of Uzbekistan has a rich flora with a large number of rare, endemic, endangered and economically valuable plant species. However, at present, due to the increase in population and the growth of agricultural and industrial production, the negative impact of anthropogenic factors on the plant world has increased many times over, which threatens the safety of not only individual plant species, but also entire natural communities and ecosystems.

Within the Samarkand region there are protected natural areas - 4 reserves. At the same time, many unique natural complexes and habitats of rare species do not have a protected status. Over the past decades, the impact of human economic activity on the environment of the Samarkand region has increased many times over. Ecosystem degradation, reduction of biological diversity and irreparable loss of the plant gene pool are becoming increasingly real in the region.

The goal of the project is to preserve rare, threatened and endemic plant species and their habitats for the flora of the Samarkand region and adjacent regions of Uzbekistan by creating a nursery for propagation of these rare plant species and organizing activities for their reintroduction and repatriation in order to enrich and maintain or restore natural habitats.
