The GEF Small Grants Programme

in Uzbekistan

Conference dedicated to 5th anniversary of GEF SGP operations in Uzbekistan

Dear friends!

Many of you know when the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) began its work in Uzbekistan. That was in 2008. But the story of the emergence of the programme dates back to 2005, when the United Nations Development Programme and the State Committee for Nature Protection meet with the representatives of government agencies, environmental organizations and resource users and begin discussions to bring the programme in Uzbekistan. And in May 2008 the program officially began its work.
During this period, the programme supports more than 50 initiatives from communities throughout Uzbekistan. The first steps were made towards the introduction of various technologies in using alternative sources of energy, we were a good step in the promotion of biogas technology that could radically change the daily work and the hard life of the farmers.

Innovative technologies were tested in the field of land use that in turn improved the enhancement and increased a productivity of large areas of cultivated lands in the country, technologies that have demonstrated how important is to keep the health of the earth. A lot of brave ideas have been implemented in the field of water conservation, for example the production of drip irrigation systems adapted to the conditions of Uzbekistan that benefited significantly for the community.

SGP is a pioneer of the revival of old pistachio forests and now technology of growing pistachio is confidently moving along the country, covering more and more hectares of unproductive land.

That's quite soon, exactly on May 28 we celebrate 5 years! 5 years – it is like if we are looking back and see what has been done or for only 5 years, when we start thinking about how much we still can do. 5 years experience in the field of innovation and new solutions, on the way of creation a harmonious relationship between mankind and nature! 5 years of adventure and excitement!

And to bring you these feelings and to share our knowledge the SGP within the framework of Eco Week dedicated to the World Environment Day, celebrates its 5-year operation in Uzbekistan. There will be a conference on the results of the program. The conference will be attended by the project implementators and beneficiaries, including many farmers, who will talk about their technologies and share their personal experiences. The first-hand information will be provided. See the conference programme below.

The main result of the GEF SGP has been and remains the knowledge of best practices in land use, water use, energy management that we want to convey to the largest possible number of people in the country to implement them in practice.

We invite all those interested in innovative technologies and practices of natural resource management to participate in our conference. There will be a lot of interesting and useful information and the opportunity to ask questions.

We will be glad to see you at our conference.

The conference will take place on 28 May 2013 at 14:00 in Tashkent, hotel Radisson Blu (88, Amir temur str., 100084)
