NAMA registered for rainfed forests

On the electronic platform of the UNFCCC, a request was formally registered for the preparation of NAMA (National Action for Climate Change Mitigation) for reforestation in the rainfed zone.

The coordination with government agencies was carried out by the authorized body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the country - the Center for Hydrometeorological Service under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The document itself was developed by the Michael Zukkov Foundation (Germany) with the support of specialists from the Republican Research and Production Center for Ornamental Horticulture and Forestry. The NAMA concept for reforestation in the rainfed zone was preliminary discussed at seminars in Tashkent and Samarkand with representatives of interested ministries and departments, staff of international organizations and scientists.

The international community pays a lot of attention to the problem of climate change. Currently, assistance mechanisms are being developed for the implementation of activities in the field of mitigation and adaptation to climate change in various sectors of the economy. National action to mitigate climate change is a relatively new mechanism to tackle this problem. Registration on the UNFCCC electronic platform serves as a link between NAMA proponents seeking financial or other support and potential donors.

This NAMA is mainly aimed at the inventory of land in the mountainous regions of Uzbekistan, as well as the development of sustainable mechanisms for financing reforestation. In the face of climate change, land use practices in the rainfed zone are economically and ecologically unsustainable. That is why it is very important to take new steps to prevent such threats and improve the efficiency of rainfed land use. The potential of pistachio as the main crop for reforestation in the rainfed zone cannot be overestimated. Pistachio is drought tolerant, economically viable and long-lived.
