Two species of sturgeons live in Uzbekistan - the Amudarya large and small shovelos. The Syrdarya shovelanos, unfortunately, has already died out, although it may still be preserved somewhere. But ithasn't been seen in a very long time.
These fish live only in the Amu Darya, nowhere else. They are unique. And, unfortunately, if nothing is done, the Amudarya shovelnose can suffer the same fate as the Syrdarya - extinction.
Russian scientist Aleksey Chernyak, in cooperation with the Mamun Academy and the Khorezm National Parks, are developing a project for submission to our Program to save these species. If there are still people willing to support such a project, it would be just great.
On his page, Alexey Chernyak tells everything about the project. If you have free time, take a look. Very interesting
When Alexey was in Tashkent, we talked about a project at Matthew Spencer's company. His story is also very interesting. Mat left England for the first of its kind sturgeon cycling run. He traveled more than 8500 km on a bicycle, lasting half a year. Mat drove through parts of Europe and Asia, along rivers where sturgeons are still found.
His path laidacross the rivers:
1. Garrone in France
2. Po in Italy
3. Danube in Romania
4. Rioni in Georgia
5. Kura in Azerbaijan
and 6 & 7. Amu Darya and Syr Darya in Uzbekistan.
The red line shows Mat's bike path.

Tashkent was the last point of Matt's journey, and from here we took him to the plane, home, to his native, good old England.
But before leaving, Mat was able to do one more small good deed. He came to one of the schools and told the children about his amazing journey and explained to the children why he did it. A small brick in the building of children's understanding of the value of wildlife.
In general, you can read Matt's presentation about his journey right here.
Well, we wanted you to enjoy a little view of these amazing creatures. All photos are taken from the website of Alexey Chernyak.
