In order to isolate the on-farm canal Navruz-Yap in the Khorezm region, a project was carried out in 2011 with assistance from the GEF SGP. This canal is 2.2 kilometers long. Leveling the canal, relining the bottom with an insulating plastic film, and backfilling this film with soil on top to avoid damage to the film was the least expensive method of isolating the canal. According to an economic analysis, this canal insulation approach had a 1.2-year return on investment, and direct investments cost little over $15,000 USD for 1 km of canal in 2013 pricing. This technique more than doubled the canal's water conservation efficiency.
