Animals of the ecocenter “Djeyran” need your help

The past year has been quite favorable for the dwellers of the ecocenter “Djeyran”. We anticipate that the population of djeyran gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) will reach 1200 animals, wild donkey (Equus hemionus) population will reach 80, wild Prejevalsky horse (Equus przewalskii), extinct in wild - 24. This is an amazing achievement of the ecocenter and the whole team working here. There is however one “but” – it will be extremely difficult to keep all these animals alive. Why?

The thing is that this year 2010 is extremely poor in terms of fodder resources borne by the desert. Our project on expanding the territory of the ecocenter is coming to its end. Unfortunately all the works on the new territories are still under way. Yes, we have succeeded in adding 9,363 more hectares to the existing territory of the ecocenter. However, we simply can’t afford transferring part of the animals there at this point in time because the area is still occupied by the domestic livestock. The veterinary condition of the livestock is extremely poor, there are potential pestholes on the joined territory and without annihilating them we face a danger of losing all wild animals should they be transferred there beforehand. We need to complete all the works before letting the wild inhabitants of the ecocenter to dwell freely on the new territories.

This is true. But the fact is that on the old part of the ecocenter right now physically too little fodder and the desert can not give food to all animals born this year. We want to keep these animals alive, because tomorrow they can live freely on the joined territory. We only need to feed them for one year. The desert has not helped us this year. But you can.

To save all the population of these animals, which are all internationally red-listed, we need to support them by giving missing food. This takes about 460 tons of forage (hay). This is about 50,000 USD. First help came from the Minnesota Zoo, which gave 2,500 USD to the ecocenter.

You can transfer any amount to the account of the ecocenter for purchase of the forage. Ask your friends to do so. You may have good friends businessmen who could potentially help. By transferring any amount, you are probably saving life of a gazelle or a horse. By transferring more, you are saving more lives.
