The GEF Small Grants Programme

in Uzbekistan

“Knowledge Fair 2013” practical seminar on innovation technologies of the GEF SGP in Uzbekistan

INNOVATIONS – RATIONAL SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY

On August 20-21, 2013 "Knowledge Fair" exhibition will be held in Uzbekistan, a series of workshops and presentations on innovative technologies introduced and experienced with the support of the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan. Presentations and training sessions on technologies and practices on effective land use and improving soil fertility, , rational use of irrigation water with the use of efficient irrigation technologies, minitechnologies production of alternative energy, sustainable use of biodiversity services and the potential of natural resources are scheduled within the framework of the fair. 17 innovative technologies from different thematic areas of the GEF SGP operations in Uzbekistan will be presented at the fair. These are technologies that are successfully tested by the programme and widely introduced in the country and those that are to be tested for further use in the economy. Among them are:
- No tillage
- 4-field crop rotation of fodder crops
- Isolation of irrigated channels
- 1 day irrigation
- Land laser planning
- Phytomelioration
- Drip irrigation
- Biogas technology
- Microhydrostation
- Energy efficient (solar) greenhouses
- Energy efficient stove
- Cultivation and biotechnology of Indigo on degraded lands
- Perspectives of intensive aquaculture in Uzbekistan
- SERHOSIL – microalgae serving for fertility
- Forest belts for the conservation of topsoil and prevention of erosion.
- Pistachio plantations – effective use of arid foothills
- Beekeeping for increasing harvesting

Those who are experienced and introduced these technologies - farmers, representatives of NGOs, and academics will directly introduce the auditors and visitors of the fair with their technologies. The farmers from all regions of the country, representatives of ministries and agencies, political parties, school leaders, media representatives, SGP partners and all stakeholders will be invited to the Fair.

The Fair is organized with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan and is carried out with the assistance and information support of the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with the support of the International Charitable Foundation "Ecosan" with the support and participation of Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration, in cooperation with the Council of farmers of Uzbekistan, Khorezm Rural Advisory Support Service (KRASS),scientific research centers, institutes and universities of the country.

The Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme, implemented by UNDP in Uzbekistan, providing free financial assistance to various community initiatives, promotes the effective and sustainable use and management of energy, land and water management, sustainable use of the services of biodiversity, the GEF SGP activities aimed at ensuring rational environmental management, as well as improving the living conditions of the local population in all regions of Uzbekistan. Our direct beneficiaries are farmers, businessmen, ordinary people who use land, water, and energy.

The purpose of the GEF SGP - the promotion of innovative technologies and best practices that can minimize the negative impact of human activities on the environment and the best use of the advantages that it can create for the human society. The results of the implementation of our technology - a growing increase in the area of better and more productive soils, water conservation for further manufacturing use, reliable power supply and efficient use of biological resources.

Innovative technologies and practices introduced by SGP and its partners, has shown its efficiency in practice. As a result of their practical implementation it was possible to demonstrate the methods for the prevention of land degradation, conservation of topsoil of agricultural land use to increase yields, achieve significant savings of water and energy.

Given the successful practice of the introduction of many technologies, the GEF SGP in collaboration with its partners held a series of workshops for farmers, communities and other users of natural resources in many areas of the country. The purpose of practical training in the areas was to bring information and knowledge about innovative technologies and practices of farming, natural resource management, sustainable use of the services of biodiversity. SGP is definitely interested to continue holding such events, actively seek cooperation with the parties concerned.

The experience and knowledge of the best practices have been and remains the main result of the GEF SGP that we want to convey to the largest possible number of potential beneficiaries in the country. The GEF SGP considers it its duty to make a contribution to the dissemination of experience and knowledge, training of existing and potential users of natural resources, contemporary and effective technologies for the sake of ensuring a sustainable future of the country and its citizens.

Small Grants Programme is pleased to invite everyone to the "Knowledge Fair", where everyone can gain invaluable first-hand experience and use it to save nature and improve people's lives.
We expect a large number of visitors to our fair. Unfortunately, the program is not able to cover the travel expenses of non-resident visitors because of big number of people. So who's interested and who really wants to learn something should come at their own expense. We apologize, but the circumstances require it. We hope for your understanding.

We will be glad to see you.
Agenda for the event is kindly attached below.
